stage 2 & 3 foods

Simple baby foods provides a list of the best foods for weaning your baby from 8 to 12 months of age. Fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins!

8 months to 10 months

Stage 2 foods are for babies between from 8-10 months old. The amount of breastmilk and/or formula will decrease as the amount of solids your baby intakes increases. Stage 2 foods should have a bit of texture being either mashed or pulsed. Also, keep small raw chunks of raw fruit and cooked vegetable mix (pea, corn carrot) make great finger foods, so that baby learns to feed him/herself. It is important that your baby gets enough iron during this stage as his/her natural reserves start running out at this point. Iron-fortified cereals and protein are important during this stage. Salt and sugar should never be introduced to be a baby in the first year. Always consult the advice of your pediatrician.

Foods to introduce:

cereals & grains:   buckwheat, flax, pasta, quinoa

fruits: blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, figs, grapes (cut in quarters), kiwi, papaya

  • Fruits can now be served raw. You can grate them or cut them into small pieces

vegetables:   asparagus, broccoli, beets, cauliflower, eggplant, onion, peppers, potato

meats & protein:   beef, egg yolk, fish, pork, beans/legumes

dairy:   hard cheese (cheddar, jack, colby), cottage cheese, cream cheese, whole milk yogurt

Stage 3 foods:

At this stage nearly all of your baby's nutrients should come from solids. They should basically be eating what you are eating except mashed, chopped or small diced. It is important that your baby is starting to feed themselves at this stage. Include finger foods & raw fruit or vegetable/salad at every meal. As always salt & sugar should be excluded during the first year. Always consult the advice of your pediatrician.

10 months to 12 months

Foods to introduce:

cereals & grains:   any type

fruits:   any berry & citrus

vegetables:   corn, cucumbers, spinach/green leafy vegetables, tomatoes

protein:   whole eggs

dairy:   whole milk as a drink & soft cheeses after 12 months
